The Importance of Vitamin D
Vitamin D, or cholecalciferol is more of a pro-hormone than it is a “vitamin.” Though the optimal level of vitamin D is 40-80 ng/dL, the average person has a blood level of only 16-25 ng/dL.
The following are just some of the health issues connected to low vitamin D:
- Increased risk of the flu
- Insulin resistance and diabetes
- Heart disease
- Osteoporosis and bone fractures
- Atopic dermatitis
- Decreased production of adrenal hormones, including DHEA, androstenedione, and cortisol
- Decreased strength
- Increased body fat
- Low birth weight of newborns
- Multiple sclerosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis Schizophrenia
- Type I diabetes
Why Thorne Vitamin D?
Thorne’s formula includes both vitamin D3. D3 is the more bioavailable form of vitamin D, whereas vitamin D2, common in vegan formulas, is poorly absorbed.*
Though it may be beneficial to include vitamin K2 when supplementing with vitamin D3, the capsules may prove to be more convenient than Thorne Vitamin D3/K2 Liquid, espeically if you travel.
Though the 5000 IU option is highlighted here, the Thorne Vitamin D comes in three other strengths: 1000 IU, 10,000 IU, and 25,000 IU per capsule. You can choose your preferred strength after you login to your Wellevate account.
Quality and Purity
Thorne dilutes their Vitamin D in-house with the branched-chain amino acid leucine. This is one of Thorne’s best practices that helps them stand apart from other supplement manufacturers.

Frequently Asked Questions
The following are the most common questions I get from members of my online fitness training program, Facebook group members, or blog readers. These are my answers and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Thorne.
How do I know how much vitamin D I should use?
Ideally, you should get your vitamin D levels tested a couple of times per year. Without knowing how well you absorb and retain it, you’re left with the conservative recommendation of 1000-3000 IU per day. However, the Vitamin D Council recommends:
- Children: 1000 IU per 25 pounds of body weight
- Adults: 5000 IU including pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Upper limit (for us Northerners): 10,000 IU per day
Do I have to take the vitamin D every day?
Because vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, your body is better at storing it than it is the water soluble vitamins like vitamin C and the B vitamins. With that in mind, some people take higher doses less often. The research doesn’t yet say one way is better than the other.
